We believe that a focus on neighborhoods and local action is good for individuals and the world. By offering this site, we are working toward the following:
We have become much more isolated in our neighborhoods than we used to be as a society. This site can help you meet neighbors and collaborate with them. Channels can help you become more aware of what is happening in your community.
Most of us have plenty of stuff sitting around that could be put to better use.
Many items can easily be shared by neighbors via loans (does every household really need its own lawnmower?). Libraries are great resources, and similarly we can re-imagine our bookshelves and sheds as lending libraries, whether to the general public or just our friends.
The Freecycle movement has also shown that one person's trash is another person's treasure. Offering items to others before discarding them is a great way to reduce, reuse, and recycle, all the while lessening how much we send to landfills.
When it makes sense to make purchases, we should give preference to local sources and sellers. In addition to supporting a local economy, this decreases transportation costs (financial and environmental), thus reducing our carbon footprints.
